There are many factors to consider when selecting a hardwood floor. The species, color, hardness and grade are important. In hardwoods, there are lightwoods and darkwoods. Some lightwoods are Maple, Birch, Fir, Oak, Ash, Beech and Eucalyptus. Darkwoods are Jarrah, Brazillian Cherry, Tigerwood, Tasmanian Blackwood, Walnut, American Cherry to name a few.
Try and co-ordinate your hardwood floor with other woods in your home, such as kitchen and bathroom cabinets, furniture, railings, even wood ceilings. The contrast between darkwood furniture and a light floor can be more appealing than darkwood furniture and a darkwood floor.
Decide what areas of your home will be covered with hardwood. Because of its ageless beauty and lifetime durability, hardwood floors are popular throughout the home. Look at high traffic areas such as the front entrance, hallways, kitchen, nook, family room, living room and bedrooms.
Hardwoods are graded, with top grades being very clear and even in color and grain. Lower grades are uneven in color and rustic in grain. It is important to note that quality is not affected, but color and length are.
Top grades are priced higher...but it really depends on the look you are trying to achieve. Rustic grades are more country in appeal...first grades such as maple are more contemporary. The distressed plank flooring 5" - 7" particularily in Fir or Pine is very popular right now.
There are a variety of widths, ranging from 1-1/4 inches to 7 inches and wider....take your pick.
After weighing all of the factors, remember, colors, varieties, widths and grade comes down to personal preference and a look you are trying to achieve. Ask questions...and with the correct information, you'll get a hardwood floor you'll be happy with for a lifetime.
