Joe Paterno has taken the bulls by the horn this morning, and in a widely reported press conference has stated: “I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.”

Paterno has pushed Penn State into a corner – and now and today Penn State needs to respond forcefully and say:

“You are Fired. We will not tolerate our employees to be aware of child molesters and do nothing about it. You may be a winner at coaching, but your conduct as one who educates youth on values is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate such people to educate our athletes, or others. Mr. Paterno: Would you want your children and grandchildren educated by someone who does nothing about child molesters? We often hear women saying that their biological clock is ticking as an indication that they understand that child-bearing should not be postponed indefinitely. Perhaps it is wisest to view the years between 30 and 35 as time to start the ‘late family’ rather than 35 if at all possible.

Life is busy. Couples marry later and defer having their children because of careers and finances. Sadly, this seemingly perfectly reasonable decision often has unfortunate consequences. Both men and women become less fertile as they age. The facts are indisputable and at least for the moment there is no easy solution. For women, there is a stage that is sometimes called ‘oopause’ that usually occurs about 8-10 years before menopause. Oopause is the stage at which eggs have very low fertility and a very high chance of development being arrested and a pregnancy miscarrying.

From 1989 to 1993, my colleagues and I conducted a research project which we called ‘PALS – Pregnancy and lifestyle study’. Put simply, we recruited 600 couples who were planning a family, recorded their answers to a large number of questions, performed some laboratory tests and then followed their progress. We didn’t interfere with or treat the couples in any way. We just observed their progress and then analysed the data. This was the first time that a large study of its kind was undertaken and it revealed some interesting results.

Our study found a clear age-related decline in fertility in both males and females. At the time, this was very surprising as previously women had been allotted all the responsibility for the age-related decline in fertility. But we were able to demonstrate that both male and female ages were independently associated with each of miscarriage and infertility. Both men and women also had slightly enhanced fertility if they paired with a younger partner. Our results have since been supported by several other studies. There is no doubt that fertility declines with age in both men and women.

I am aware, like everyone else, of occasional remarkable stories of men fathering children when they are very old. Some of these stories are probably true. Others may be cases of mistaken paternity. Some women also conceive naturally after 50 but these cases are exceptional and far from normal.

The major decline in fertility is obvious shortly after age 35 and the change is quite dramatic. In women aged between 20 and 34 the infertility rate is about 10%. This doubles to over 21% between 35 and 39 and rises to over 30% at age 40 and increases dramatically from then age. The male age effect is very similar to the female.

Just as the rate of infertility increases with ageing, so sadly does the rate of miscarriage. I regularly receive emails or phone calls from women telling me that they had no problems conceiving when they were young but now, having decided to have another child, they are experiencing difficulty. Often the decision to have more children is associated with a new relationship. Sometimes the caller has not had any children previously and has met the love of her life when she was older.

The story shared by many couples who are experiencing age-related difficulties is similar to this. ‘We have been trying to conceive for some months without success and didn’t think anything was going to happen. Month after month we were disappointed. About eight months ago we were delighted to find ‘ourselves’ pregnant. We were so excited and joyful as we planned our new life with our new family. Then one morning devastation occurred and our doctor confirmed our tragedy. We had miscarried’. Most of the couples who contact me have had more than one miscarriage and some have had tests that have shown that the embryo had carried an extra chromosome.

In the PALS study, the rates of miscarriage were 10% at 25-29, 18% between ages 30 and 34, 23% between ages 35 and 39 and 70% in women 40 and older. These rates, are of course not absolute and women’s chronological age is not necessarily an exact match to her reproductive age but this is the general picture. It should be noted that we had very few women in the oldest age group and the average result could be slightly better than this. In general though the situation from about age 40 is grim.

Justin Morgan was a teacher, composer, businessman, and horseman who acquired a small rough-coated bay colt of relatively unknown lineage who was born in 1789 and named him Figure. He was a rather unremarkable horse that nobody wanted because he was too small, yet he became the foundation of an entire breed of horses recognized for quality and dependability.

The ancestry of the colt name Figure who founded the Morgan breed is unknown, but is thought to be of Dutch, Thoroughbred, or Arabian breeding. History’s best guess is that his sire was True Briton, who was respected for his excellence and who sired quality horses. His unnamed dam was described as being of the “Wild-air breed’ with her sire being a son of Church’s Wildair by Wildair (Delancey’s) out of a mare named Wildair.

There is quite an in-depth history and many stories about this particular little horse, including a Disney movie in 1972 “Justin Morgan Had a Horse” that was based on a book of the same name. Figure’s ability to out walk, out trot, outrun, and out pull other horses was legendary. For example, it is said that he pulled a log that no draft horse could budge, and that he outran the most winning racehorse central Vermont had ever known. From these anecdotes came the Morgan Horse owners’ claim that “this horse can do anything”, and apparently the breed does. Whatever equine discipline you can think of, the Morgan Horse will be found to be a part of it and likely excelling in it. Even when harness racing was popular in the1800′s, the world’s fastest trotting stallion was Ethan Allen 50, Justin Morgan’s great-grandson.

After Justin Morgan’s death, Figure was passed on to new owners and in the tradition of the times, he became known by his former owner’s name, Justin Morgan. He spent his life working on farms, hauling freight, and as a parade mount at militia trainings. Over a period of 30 years, the little horse remained sound in limb, stamina and sight, throughout a lifetime of two ordinary horses. He also had showy, ground-covering gaits with speed to spare at any one of them and was an extremely gentle horse around children.

Justin Morgan’s most valuable asset was the prepotency of his genes. No matter what type of mare he was bred to, draft or light racing horse, his offspring inherited his image, his abilities and his distinguishing characteristics. And not only his offspring inherited the traits, but the prepotency also went through several generations. Today, every registered Morgan Horse traces back to Justin Morgan through his most famous sons Woodbury, Bulrush, and Sherman. Sadly, the little Justin Morgan died in 1821 from an untreated kick received from another horse, so his true longevity was never realized.

Morgan Horses were used as cavalry mounts and artillery horses. They were sensible under fire; could march tirelessly all day; could maintain their condition on unpredictable rations; and were loyal to their riders. The only survivor in the Battle of Little Big Horn was Keogh’s Morgan-bred horse, Comanche. The American Morgan Horse Farm was established in Weybridge, Vermont in 1907, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the breeding and preservation of the Morgan horse. The overall impression is a unique combination of draft-like substance, Arabian-like heads with a Saddlebred-like elegance.

The Morgan Horse is considered to be the oldest of all American breeds and was strong enough to contribute greatly to almost every other American light horse breed while retaining its own identity across two centuries. The American Saddlebred, the Quarter Horse, the English Hackney, the American Standardbred, and the Tennessee Walking Horse, among others, all owe much to the Morgan Horses in their own ancestry.
